Five Common Myths About Pilates

Introduction

Almost everyone has heard of Pilates, and most people think they know what it is. Unfortunately there are many misconceptions swirling around out there. Let’s unravel some common myths about Pilates and learn the truth about this marvelous exercise system.

Myth #1: Pilates is only for women.

Tell that to Lebron James, Tiger Woods, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Sylvester Stallone, Peyton Manning and the countless other men who do Pilates regularly. The exercises themselves were developed by a man named Joseph Pilates—a gymnast, boxer and military trainer. Men find that incorporating Pilates into their workouts helps to keep their bodies limber, improves their ability to focus and decreases their risk of injury.

Myth #2: Pilates is just like yoga.

Pilates and yoga are like cousins. Both link movement and breath and can improve flexibility. Pilates relies more on developing core strength and stability. Yoga tends to be static; you move into a pose and hold it, then into the next pose and hold it. In Pilates we are constantly moving.

Myth #3: Pilates is only an ab workout.

While there is a definite emphasis on developing core strength, Pilates does work your entire body. It promotes functional movement and coordination, improved alignment, greater pelvic stability and better posture.

Myth #4: Pilates is only for younger and very fit people.

Pilates is ideal for a wide range of ages, physical conditions and needs. The exercises can easily be modified. It is gentle on the joints and promotes better balance and movement with greater ease. As a low impact exercise, it is especially suitable for older adults or those recovering from injuries.

Myth #5: Pilates is “just stretching”.

While improved flexibility is a significant benefit of a regular Pilates practice, it is so much more than that. Pilates sessions provide a full body workout to build muscle, decrease risk of injury, and enhance our ability to perform everyday tasks. Pilates allows you to improve your flexibility and strength all in one efficient workout.

Conclusion

Pilates has something to offer virtually everyone. Now that you

know the truth about it, the only question is when will we see

you in our studio?
